What is Cosmetic Dentistry?
Cosmetic Dentistry is the art and science of improving your smile. There is a broad range of cosmetic dental enhancements available that can help you achieve the look you want. With today’s technology, the list of procedures has grown to include: teeth whitening, dental implants, dental bridges, porcelain veneers, dental bonding, tooth contouring and reshaping, dentures, dental fillings, root canals, dental crowns, dental caps, and cosmetic gum surgery.

Teeth Whitening:
Teeth whitening is a chemical procedure used to remove the teeth’s discolouration and extrinsic staining on the outer surface of the tooth. The term "teeth whitening" can refer to a many different techniques that are used to improve the colour and brightness of the patient's teeth. Some of these techniques include: abrasive teeth brightening, chemical whitening, mild acid whitening, and the latest technique laser teeth whitening.

Dental Implants:
Dentistry uses different types of implants. “Osseointegrated” implants have proven much success. This is a process where the implant and bone mesh. A bond is formed mechanically and chemically and the jawbone initiates growth into the implants. Results have shown patients to be satisfied for years after the procedure! Dentists use dental implants in different ways. A single implant may be required to bridge a gap, double implants to support a bridge or even four if the patient requires this.

Dental Bridges:
If you have a space or a missing tooth, a custom made bridge will be made to fill in the space using a false tooth. The teeth are bridged together using the false tooth and the teeth that surround it.

Porcelain Veneers:
Porcelain Veneers are an alternative solution to crowns. They are specially shaped, thin pieces of plastic or porcelain which are then placed with adhesive to the front of your teeth. The procedure requires little or no anesthesia. Teeth that have been chipped, crooked, unwanted spaces, stained are all problems that may be cured by veneers. In most cases, this procedure will not require the dentist to remove too much of the tooth. Veneers typically won’t stain and cost less than veneers, making this a very popular procedure that lasts between ten to fifteen years.

Dental Bonding:
Bonding is a procedure by which a tooth-coloured material, like hard plastic, is attached to your teeth, thus creating a bond. Bonding can be used to change size and shape, change the colour of your teeth, fix fractured teeth or even make teeth appear to be straight. Teeth that have been bonded can be finished to appear the same colour as your natural teeth.

Tooth Contouring and Reshaping:
This procedure is sometimes used as a substitute for braces in certain situations. Dental reshaping and contouring is a procedure to correct chipped or cracked teeth, crooked teeth or overlapping teeth in just one visit. In many cases this procedure is for subtle changes, just millimeters of a change can produce a perfect smile. Tooth Contouring and reshaping is often used to alter the shape, length or position of your teeth.

Dentures:
Dentures are replacement teeth that can be removed. They are generally prepared out of acrylic resin and in some cases porcelain or metal are incorporated for additional structural support. There are two central types of dentures, partial and complete. Both are custom fitted to the patient. Dentures will appear natural if they are properly maintained. Dentures can help muscles strengthen, therefore controlling expressions that need support of your teeth.

Dental Fillings:
As an alternative to metal dental fillings, composite resin dental fillings were crafted. These fillings are matched to the colour of the tooth to look natural and blend in. Dental fillings are strong and durable.

Root Canals:
When the nerve tissue inside a tooth degenerates or dies a root canal is required. This experience is not always painful. It can remain untreated or unnoticed for years. Dentists occasionally discover that a root canal may be required during a routine x-ray.

Dental Crowns:
A dental crown usually takes two visits to complete. The first visit your dentist will make an impression of your tooth for the crown to be created and a temporary crown will be inserted. Once the permanent crown is ready, it is then cemented onto your tooth. First, a filling must be put in place to stabilize your tooth, prior to placing a crown. This is because of lacking structure of the original tooth.

Dental Caps:
A mold of your tooth will be made by your cosmetic dentist and the custom cap will be created by a dental laboratory. Generally you will wear a temporary cap until the permanent cap is ready for placement. This permanent cap is cemented to your tooth. A filling must be put in place to stabilize your tooth, prior to placing the cap. Colour of the cap is matched to your teeth colour to ensure a natural looking tooth.

Cosmetic Gum Surgery:Depending on your smile, there are two main cosmetic gum surgery procedures: Gummy Smile (Excessive Gingival Display) and Long Tooth Smile (Gum Recession). Gummy Smile can happen over time due to wear and tear of the teeth from having a longer than normal upper jawbone, teeth grinding or a short upper lip. This can be recognized by large gums and small teeth. Long Tooth Smile occurs when your teeth appear longer than normal.
