2006-06-16, Patient Fears Lead To Avoidance Behaviour
Amongst the millions of people in the UK who suffer from fears and phobias, one of the most common fears, is the fear of visiting the dentist or hygienist. This fear prevents many people from being able to receive the treatment and care they require in or

Recognising this, DP specially commissioned a UK survey, which was carried out by the “Professional Panel on Dental Anxiety” and identified patient fears of visiting dentists. The report found that 63% of people in the UK have some kind of fear or phobia and that the classic sign of phobia is when the fear leads to ‘avoidance’ behaviour; this trait is extremely common with dental fears. The report also discovered that dental visits are the 2nd biggest fear for men and the 3rd biggest generally, affecting 20% of people, amongst those who have visited the dentist before, this figure rises slightly to 24%. Fear, pain, injections and numbness are among the reasons people cited as the cause of their dislike of dental visits. When those who have specific ‘dent-a-phobia’ were asked to rank their fears, injections came out as the worst aspect, with 36% placing them in first place and a further 34% placing them in second. Offering a solution to these fears, DP have created Ox ®, a new injection-free anaesthesia, which uses gel applied to the gums by a special dispenser. When Ox  was described to dent-a-phobes, two-thirds said that they would be less afraid if it was available at their surgery and 50% said that they would be more likely to attend. For further information on Ox  please contact DP on 01932 853422 END Ox ® and Ox ™ Dispenser are registered trademarks of DP Ltd and/or its subsidiaries
